Helix aspersa
Description: ½ inches, shell is brownish with dark stripes
Habitat: Wooded, rocky areas
Behavior: In winter, snails burrow into soil, sealing themselves in their shells with slime to keep from drying out
Food: Plant material
Field Notes: Snails make layer of slime on which to glide; eyes are on top of tentacles; lay mass of hundreds of jelly-like eggs in ground, covering with soil
