Mephitis mephitis
Description: Glossy black coat, thin white stripe between the eyes, broad white stripe on its back and bushy tail; 3-10 pounds
Habitat: Forest edges with open areas, prefers to be near water
Food: Omnivorous: insects, small mammals, eggs, fruit, vegetation, garbage, and carrion
Field Notes: Famous for defending itself from predators up to twenty feet away with a harmless, foul-smelling spray
